Genioplasty

What is Genioplasty?

Genioplasty, also known as chin augmentation, is a plastic surgery operation that shifts the structure of the jaw to balance out the facial features.

How is Genioplasty surgery done?

Genioplasty is usually done with chin implants made with silicone that will mimic the existing bone structure. A cut will be made through the lower lip or below the chin to reposition the chin bone and/or place the implants.

It should be noted that genioplasty is not the same as mentoplasty, also known as chin reduction surgery, during which excess bone is removed from the jaw.

The reasons for having Genioplasty

There might be multiple reasons to get a genioplasty. The most prominent reason is the aesthetic desire to balance out the face structure. However, receding chins or realigning chins can also be listed as common reasons behind having a genioplasty. Genioplasty before and after photos reveal the effectiveness of the operation on the people's faces.

Before the Genioplasty operation

Ahead of the genioplasty, the patients are expected to avoid blood-thinning medications and stop smoking.

After the Genioplasty operation

Following the operation, the patients are likely to experience soreness and pain. Both fade away gradually during the healing process. The chin area might also get swallowed and bruised, both of which can be avoided through a cold compress. The patients are recommended to sleep upright during this period. The patients should also be extra careful on their diet as softer foods are recommended to consume.

What are the risks of Genioplasty?

Possible complications that might occur with genioplasty are numbness, bleeding, and infection.

How much does a genioplasty cost?

Genioplasty cost is usually between $2,000-$4,000.

Does genioplasty improve jawline?
