Otoplasty

What is Otoplasty?

Even though ears’ main function is to enable hearing, since they are positioned around our face just like a frame, impacting our appearance dramatically. Otoplasty is the plastic surgery operation that enables people who are not satisfied with the way their ears look to reshape and resize them. It is mostly preferred by the people who have a jug ear.

How is Otoplasty surgery done?

Multiple surgical techniques are being used in otoplasty operations. In most cases, the surgeon makes an incision on either the back of the ears or within the ears. Then, the excess skin and cartilage are being extracted, while the remaining tissue is repositioned. Then, after being satisfied with the new shape of the ear, the surgeon stitches the tissue back. The entire operation lasts approximately two hours.

The reasons for having Otoplasty

Any type of discontent with the appearance of the ears might be the reason for having an otoplasty. Some of the most common complaints are ears that are sticking out too far from the face, and disproportionately large ears. The operation usually is done on both ears since preserving the symmetry of the two is the key regardless of the complaint. Though being effective in reshaping the ears, otoplasty cannot relocate the ears or improve the hearing abilities of the patient. Anyone older than 5 can have an otoplasty operation.

Before the Otoplasty operation

Ahead of the otoplasty, the patients are expected to go through a physical exam to determine they have no contradictory health conditions to the otoplasty operation. The patients are also expected to avoid any blood-thinning medications as well as smoking. Last but not least, since the local anesthesia will cause the patient to experience numbness after the operation, it is crucial to arrange someone who will accompany the patient following the surgery.

After the Otoplasty operation

Following the operation, the patient might experience mild discomfort, which can be overcome with the right pain medication that the surgeon recommends. The ears are covered with bandages after the surgery to secure them. The bandages are taken off a few days after the surgery. It usually takes a few weeks for all the stitches to be removed after the operation. The patients are recommended to not sleep on their sides to avoid any harm to the ears. They are also recommended to prefer button-down shirts and avoid anything with turtlenecks. Since each patient’s recovery speed is different from one another, the patients are required to consult with their doctors on when to resume their regular everyday activities.

What are the risks of Otoplasty?

Some of the complications that occur with otoplasty can be summarized as scarring, the asymmetry between ears, loss of sensation, and overcorrection.
