Hair Transplant

What is Hair Transplant?

Hair transplant is a procedure during which the bald parts of the head are covered with the hair from the parts that have intense hair.

How is Hair Transplant surgery done?

Hair transplant surgery, which often takes place under local anesthesia, has two different procedures that are being preferred by the surgeon depending on the complaint of the patient. The first one is slit grafts, which contain 4 to 10 grafts, while the second procedure, micrografts, contain 1 to 2 grafts.

Regardless of the procedure, the surgeon cleans the scalp of the patient first and numbs the area with anesthesia. Then, he/she obtains follicles for the operation, which can be done in two ways. In follicular unit transplantation (FUT), a scalpel is used to scalp the skin, and then, the separated part of the scalp is divided into small sections which enable a natural-looking hair transplant. In follicular unit extraction (FUE), small holes are made on the scalp where the hair is transplanted on.

The FUE Hair transplant is essentially an organ transplant that’s been operated on for over 60 years around the medical circles. The operation takes place in three steps which are extraction of the hair follicles, making cuts on the head, and transplantation. During the operation, the hair follicles are first removed from their original place carefully. Then, cuts are made on the head to provide a space for the hair follicles to be replaced. Then, the grafts are placed on these opened cuts so that new hair can grow. One of the most common FUE hair transplantation methods is Sapphire hair transplantation, during which sapphire blades are used. Sapphire hair transplantation is highly common among men in the modern age as it provides a very natural look with intense thick hair thanks to the usage of micromotors. These micromotors allow the doctor to replace more hair follicles in a shorter time, which results in natural-looking healthy hair. Then, during the transplantation stage, sapphire blades are used in placing the grafts to the newly opened grafts.

Another hair transplantation method is DHI hair transplantation, during which no new cuts are made on the head to create new canals. Instead, the grafts are placed directly to the transplantation area through the insertion of the grafts to the skin through the tip of a pen.

The hair transplant operation lasts 4 or more hours. It might also be done in multiple sessions so that the patient achieves his/her desired look. Each session is done a few months apart to give the scalp enough time to be healed.

The reasons for having Hair Transplant

The main reasons for having a hair transplant are balding or thinning of the hair. These conditions might result from multiple factors, including diet, stress, illness, medication, or injuries. However, the most common factor is simply genetics. Hair transplant before and after photos reveal the success of the operation in providing natural hair growth.

Before the Hair Transplant operation

Ahead of the hair transplant surgery, the patients are expected to stop using any hair treatment products on their scalp, while also avoiding smoking and nicotine.

After the Hair Transplant operation

Following the operation, the stitches are being removed within 10 days. The patients might initially experience numbness, but it takes only a few days for most people to return to their usual daily activities. It is expected to experience some hair fall within 2-3 weeks after the surgery, which is completely normal as it paves the way for further hair growth. The new hair growth usually takes place up to 12 months following the surgery. The doctor might also recommend some medication to speed up the recovery process while preventing hair loss.

What are the risks of a Hair Transplant?

Some of the possible complications that might occur with hair transplantation are bleeding, swelling, bruising, numbness, itching, and infection.
